Josephine Haby

I was born in Ballarat. Although I always knew I was Aboriginal, I did not grow up with a strong understanding of my culture or the cultural practices that had been handed down through generations. As I grew older and had children of my own, I began to discover more about my Aboriginal heritage and my own connection to culture. Becoming a mother made me want to learn more, not only for myself but so I could share that knowledge, pride and connection with my children. My journey of reconnecting with culture is ongoing, and creating has become an important part of that journey. For me, creating is about connection, healing and finding my voice. It connects me to my past, my present and my culture. There are things I cannot always put into words, but I can express them through what I create. Creating gives me a voice when I cannot speak. In 2023, I began taking my creative practice more seriously, starting with weaving using raffia. I have continued to explore different ways of creating and enjoy working with materials that I can upcycle and repurpose. Giving something that may have been discarded a new life is meaningful to me and has become part of the way I approach my creative practice. One of the biggest highlights of my journey so far has been working at a First Nations art gallery. Being surrounded by First Nations artists, artworks, stories and creative practices strengthened my confidence and helped me see what was possible for my own creative journey. Another important milestone was having my first exhibition at a local shop in Beaufort. Seeing my work displayed and having the opportunity to share it with the community was a very proud and meaningful moment for me. It gave me the confidence to continue developing my practice and sharing my creations with others. My work reflects my ongoing journey of reconnecting, learning, healing and finding a deeper sense of belonging. I create from my own experiences and connection to culture, and I hope my work can open a space for people to pause, connect and learn more about the stories and journey behind the creations. For me, creating is not just about making something beautiful. It is about connection, identity, healing and leaving something meaningful behind — for my children, for my community, and for anyone who approaches my work with respect and a genuine desire to learn.
