Arthur Phillip Homes

This digital photograph depicts an Australian landscape scene in which a constructed advertising billboard marketing the imagined ‘Arthur Phillip Homes’ has been erected to advertise ‘house and land packages’ in the colony. The work responds to the housing arrangements on the First Fleet in preparation for the development of the new colony. Arthur Phillip, the colony’s first governor was well catered for on settling at Port Jackson with a pre-fabricated house brought to the colony by one of the three supply ships of the First Fleet. The work responds to the systematic preparation and organisation of the First Fleet in its aims to create the fledgling colony of New South Wales. This work also responds to the consequent selection and granting of land to liberated convicts and then free immigrants. The work speaks to the parameters and historical facts of settlement at the time and the pressures of encroaching settlement on Aboriginal people.
